Catching the Best of the Australian Gold Coast
Thinking about the perfect weather, the pristine beaches and the terrific pace of life on the Gold Coast of Australia, it’s easy to see more than a few good reasons to spend your holiday here. If that very vacation to the Gold Coast is on your mind, take advantage of these highlights, which I have listed by the month.
The calendar of events listed below is by no means exhaustive. So do some of your own investigations as well as following our guide below.
January: How does the Magic Millions Carnival sound? That’s exactly what you’ll find on the Goldy every January with this legendary horse racing event. You’ll find yearling sales, races, formal dinners, parties and more, all leading up to the main event, the Magic Millions Race, where more than $3 Million will go to the winner.
February: Because of the light schedule in February, the traveler looking for quiet days at the beach will find them in abundance. The school holidays finish up, the tourists clear out and the Gold Coast has that local feel all over again. If you like to relax without remembering the society you left behind, come in February.
March: Every March, the surfing world turns their collective attention to the Gold Coast, as the first event on the annual World Championship Tour is fought out on our waves. Given how much Australian surfers love the Gold Coast as a surfing destination generally, March really becomes a special time for surfers local and visiting, who find themselves visiting here.
April: The Malfunction Surf Festival cruises into town. Are you a surfer who has a touch of nostalgia for the surfing days not too long past? If so, this festival is for you. Aimed at longboarders and retro surfers, the five day carnival has a look at many aspects of the surfie culture, including art and memorabilia, surf vehicles, surf movies and a surf celebrity dinner.
May: May is blues month, as Broadbeach’s Blues Festival lights up the schedule for five days of music, fun and partying in one of the biggest events of the year. Over 100,000 are on hand for this party, which takes some of the world’s best musicians and adds them to a street festival only Australia could host.
June: If May is for blues lovers, June is for whale lovers. The big season for whale watching starts in June, when the annual migration up North takes place and whale watchers flock to the beach to have a look.
July: The Gold Coast Marathon in July has become more than a race. It has become a weekend of fun and fitness, and a celebration of our modern day athletes who can accomplish these amazing feats of endurance.
August: Food and drink lovers make their way to Australia’s Gold Coast every August to sample wines and cuisines in the festival known as Tastes of the Gold Coast. In this idyllic setting, the best local chefs and wine producers put their creations on display and the epicureans among us get to feast until your hearts are content. If you think Australia’s cuisine can’t compare with the world’s best, stop by in August.
September: On Currumbin Beach in September, you’ll find a truly unique event in the Gold Coast’s annual Swell Sculpture Festival. Each sculpture is designed for and outdoor showing, so sensitive museum pieces are not around, with this festival showcases bold statements from artists thinking on a large scale. Enjoy the celebration of life and art at the street festival.
October: Car racing comes to the streets of Surfers Paradise. In years passed it was indy, more recently is the SuperGP. Regardless the race, its a massive festival for those who love all things auto.
November – December: Schoolies Week comes to the Gold Coast. Its become an institution for Australian high school leavers to descend on the Gold Coast to celebrate finishing their secondary schooling. Its a 3 week graduation festival, a rite of passage, where the nation’s school leavers get the chance to taste the freedom they have worked for for 12 years. Its the perfect holiday event for you if your are 18ish and just finishing high school.
If your ideal holiday isn’t one shared with a city of maraudering teenages and you are coming to the Gold Coast during this time of the year, we suggest you book your hotel a little bit out of Surfers Paradise, which is central to the schoolies action. Anything between Mermaid Beach and Coolangatta should be fine.
I hope there are a few worthwhile tips here for travelers who are looking to come to Australia’s Gold Coast. Enjoy your vacation.
