Dallas Cowboys’ Video Unit Must be Adjusted

September 12th, 2009 by Ryan Lacioca

Rabid sports fans, the media, and even casual sports enthusiasts have all been talking about the scoreboard inside the new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys ever since an incident that took place this past preseason. It’s the biggest high definition video monitor in the world, and it sits atop the brand new Cowboys Stadium football field.

Just a few weeks ago, during the first ever game played inside Cowboys Stadium, the team faced off against the Tennessee Titans in a preseason football game. During this game, a ball was kicked by Tennessee’s punter. The punted ball went high enough to hit the video unit, leading to immediate concerns that its height must be adjusted.

A recent report now indicates that the league’s officials have acknowledged the fact that the NFL is to blame for this incident.

This report essentially states that Ray Anderson, who heads up operations for the league, admitted that the league should have done some more research into the ideal height for this video screen, as it could clearly be an issue during the season.

Anderson stated that the league was way off in its research during a meeting in New York on September 3rd. They were sloppy, he says, and threw up a guess without really testing the limits. They felt that 85 feet would be ample, and opted for 90 to play it safe, but they were clearly wrong in their research. Anderson also acknowledged that the league must do something about this problem.

Jerry Jones, owner of the dallas Cowboys, also vowed to correct the issue. Until the unit itself can be moved, he’s stated that an ad hanging from the bottom of the unit will be taken away.

This screen is no joke. With a 180 foot length and a 73 foot height, it bests the screen at Yankee Stadium, and any other in the world. The value of this screen is a whopping $40 million.

At the end of the day, this is an issue that must be dealt with. The stadium is a beautiful one, but there’s no question that playability is more important than glitz when it comes down to it. Look for a quick solution to the issue based on the above.
