First open your image in the Developer module (Press ‘D’)

There are several things to adjust using the sliders that should give you a pleasing result without having to go on to the tone curve. It is important to set each level in the correct order,

First step is to adjust the overall brightness of the image using the exposure slide control. Make the image appear well exposed, but don’t worry too much yet about the details of the shadows or highlights.

You need to be able to see the top left and right panels

Whilst holding down the Alt key move the exposure control either way until you see a change in the main image.

As you move the slider to the right you will see detail starting to appear, this is the point at which clipping is occurring in the highlights. As soon as this occurs back off the adjustment a little.

Check that you image is still showing the correct amount of detail in the light areas.

If the highlights have blown too much you can now use the recover control to bring them back a little. A small adjustment should be all that is needed.

When making the adjustment with the recovery slider, you can keep the Alt key pressed (as before) to show the exact area of blown highlights.

This is a great way to bring back detail that you thought may have been lost for example in a white wedding dress.

The Blacks control is used to increase or decrease the contrast level of the image.

Move the control to the left and right at the same time depress the Alt key.

This time the screen goes white and black starts to appear when you start to clip.

This should be visible with a tiny movement of the slider.

Got to the point when you begin to see black appear in the image and then ‘retreat’ a tad.

Make any small adjustment to the ‘Fill Light’ slider to bring back detail in the shadows.

Too much fill light will make for some weird results, so take care.

Fine tuning of the colour saturation should be made using the Vibrancy slider which is a much more subtle tool than the Saturation slider (which should generally be avoided).

That’s it – this method is a great way to start processing an image and can dramatically improve the ‘wow’ factor of a picture.
