There are a range of options in existence for trainees wanting to find a job in the computer industry. To find one that will suit you, search for companies with advisors who can find out an ideal career for your personal profile, and give you an understanding of the details of the job, to confirm it’s the right one for you.

There are courses covering Microsoft User Skills up to Web Design, Databases, Programming and Networking. There is so much choice and so the chances are you’ll want to discuss your requirements with an experienced advisor prior to making your choice: it would be awful to learn about a subject for an area that you don’t enjoy!

By taking advantage of the latest training methods and keeping costs to a minimum, you’ll soon become familiar with a new style of course provider offering a finer level of training and support for hundreds of pounds less.

Trainees looking at this market are usually quite practically-minded, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and poring through books and manuals. If you identify with this, use multimedia, interactive learning, where you can learn everything on-screen.

Memory is vastly improved with an involvement of all our senses – educational experts have expounded on this for years now.

Search for a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll be learning from instructor videos and demo’s, with the facility to practice your skills in interactive lab’s.

It’s wise to view some examples of the kind of training materials you’ll be using before you sign the purchase order. Always insist on instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and interactive audio-visual sections with practice modules.

Pick actual CD or DVD ROM’s whenever you can. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.

Always expect authorised exam simulation and preparation programs as part of your training package.

Some students can get thrown by practicing questions for their exams that are not from official sources. Often, the phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s important to prepare yourself for this.

As you can imagine, it is really important to be confident that you’ve thoroughly prepared for the real exam before taking it. Going over mock-up tests will help to boost your attitude and saves you time and money on failed exams.

How the program is actually delivered to you isn’t always given the appropriate level of importance. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the order and how fast does each element come?

You may think it logical (when study may take one to three years to achieve full certification,) for a training company to release one section at a time, as you pass each element. But:

What if you find the order pushed by the company’s salespeople doesn’t suit all of us. It may be difficult to get through all the modules inside their defined time-scales?

To be straight, the very best answer is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but get all the study materials at the start. You’re then in possession of everything in the event you don’t complete everything quite as quick as they’d want.

Huge changes are flooding technology over the next generation – and it only gets more exciting every day.

We’ve barely started to get a feel for how technology will define our world. Computers and the Internet will profoundly revolutionise how we see and interact with the rest of the world over the next few years.

And keep in mind that on average, the income of a person in the IT market across the UK is considerably more than in the rest of the economy, which means you will be in a good position to gain considerably more in the IT sector, than you’d get in most other industries.

The need for professionally qualified and skilled IT workers is assured for quite some time to come, because of the continuous expansion in the marketplace and the massive skills gap still present.

Does an MCSE appeal to you? If the answer’s ‘yes’, there’s a good chance that you’ll fall into one of the following categories: You are a knowledgeable person and you’d like to gain accreditation with an MCSE. In contrast this might be your initial foray into the computer workplace, and your research tells you that there are many opportunities for people with the right qualifications.

As you discover more about training colleges, don’t use any that short-change you by not upgrading their courses to the latest version from Microsoft. Overall, this will cost the student a great deal more due to the fact that they’ve been educated in an out-of-date syllabus which will have to be revised very quickly.

Watch out for training colleges who are just trying to sell you something. Always remember that purchasing a course to qualify for an MCSE is much like purchasing a vehicle. They’re not all the same; some are comfortable and reliable, whilst some will be completely unreliable. A conscientious organisation will spend time understanding your needs to be sure the course will work for you. When providers are proud of their courses, they’ll show you examples of it prior to registering.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always proper direct-access 24×7 support from dedicated instructors and mentors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends.

Be wary of any training providers which use ‘out-of-hours’ call-centres – where you’ll get called back during the next ‘working’ day. This is no use if you’re stuck and need an answer now.

World-class organisations tend to use an online 24 hours-a-day system pulling in several support offices across the globe. You will have an interface which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres any time of the day or night: Support when you need it.

Never make do with anything less. Direct-access round-the-clock support is really your only option when it comes to computer-based training. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; usually though, we’re out at work while the support is live.

People attracted to this sort of work are usually quite practically-minded, and don’t always take well to classrooms, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this is putting you off studying, go for more modern interactive training, where everything is presented via full motion video.

Learning psychology studies show that memory is aided when all our senses are involved, and we take action to use what we’ve learned.

Find a course where you’ll get a host of DVD-ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, and then have the opportunity to hone your abilities through virtual lab’s.

You must ensure that you see some example materials from the company you’re considering. It’s essential they incorporate instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s.

Go for actual CD or DVD ROM’s every time. You’re then protected from the variability of broadband quality and service.

If your advisor doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s likely they’re actually nothing more than a salesman. If they wade straight in with a specific product before understanding your background and whether you have any commercial experience, then it’s very likely to be the case.

With some work-based experience or qualifications, it may be that your starting point of study is not the same as someone new to the industry.

Working through a foundation module first will sometimes be the most effective way to commence your computer studies, depending on your skill level at the moment.

Don’t get hung-up, as many people do, on the training course itself. Your training isn’t about getting a plaque on your wall; this is about employment. Focus on the end-goal.

It’s possible, in many cases, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then find yourself trapped for decades in something completely unrewarding, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct research when you should’ve – at the outset.

You’ll want to understand the expectations of your industry. What particular exams they’ll want you to gain and how to gain experience. It’s definitely worth spending time assessing how far you’d like to progress your career as it will present a very specific set of accreditations.

Talk to an experienced industry professional who has a background in the industry you’re considering, and who’ll explain to you a detailed run-down of what to expect in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this before commencement of any training path will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

There are a total of 4 specialist training sectors in the overall A+ programme, of which you’ll need certification in two subjects to gain A+ competency. But restricting yourself to two of the specialised areas is likely to leave your knowledge base somewhat light. At least learn about all four – for greater confidence in the world of work.

Qualifying in CompTIA A+ without additional courses will mean that you’re able to repair and fix stand-alone PC’s and MAC’s; ones that are generally not connected to a network – which means the home or small business market.

If you would like to be someone who works in a multi-faceted environment – in network support, add Network+ to your CompTIA A+, or alternatively look at doing an MCSA or MCSE with Microsoft as you’ll need a more advanced experience of the way networks work.

It’s not uncommon for companies to offer inclusive exam guarantees – they always involve paying for the exam fees up-front, when you pay for the rest of your course. Before you get carried away with a course with such a promise, why not look at the following:

You’ll be charged for it ultimately. It’s definitely not free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package.

Students who go in for their examinations when it’s appropriate, funding them as they go are much more likely to pass. They are aware of what they’ve paid and revise more thoroughly to make sure they’re ready.

Hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you’re ready, and hang on to your cash. You’ll also be able to choose where to do your exams – so you can choose somewhere closer to home.

A lot of current training course providers make huge amounts of money through getting in the money for exam fees early then hoping you won’t see them all through.

You should fully understand that re-takes with organisations with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are tightly controlled. They will insist that you take pre-tests first until you’ve proven that you’re likely to pass.

On average, exams cost approximately 112 pounds twelve months or so ago via Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So why pay hundreds or thousands of pounds extra to have ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when common sense dictates that the responsible approach is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

One useful service offered by some training providers is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is to help you get your first commercial position. The fact of the matter is it isn’t a complex operation to land your first job – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Whatever you do, avoid waiting until you have completed your exams before updating your CV. As soon as you start studying, list what you’re working on and get it out there!

Getting your CV considered is more than not being known. A surprising amount of junior jobs are got by trainees (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.)

You can usually expect quicker service from a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service than any training course provider’s national service, as they’ll know the area better.

A big frustration for a number of course providers is how hard trainees are prepared to study to get qualified, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the job they’ve acquired skills for. Get out there and hustle – you might find it’s fun.

Of all the important things to consider, one of the most essential is always full 24×7 support with professional mentors and instructors. Far too often we see trainers who only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support.

You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and phone support is often to a call-centre who will just take down the issue and email it over to their technical team – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, when it’s convenient to them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re lost and confused and only have a specific time you can study.

The very best programs tend to use an online access 24×7 facility utilising a variety of support centres throughout multiple time-zones. You’ll have an environment which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres irrespective of the time of day: Support when you need it.

Find an educator that cares. Because only live 24×7 support truly delivers for technical programs.

Commercial qualifications are now, without a doubt, already replacing the traditional routes into IT – why then has this come about?

Industry now recognises that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, official accreditation supplied for example by CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA often is more effective in the commercial field – for considerably less.

Many degrees, for instance, become confusing because of a great deal of loosely associated study – with much too broad a syllabus. This holds a student back from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

Put yourself in the employer’s position – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What should you do: Go through loads of academic qualifications from graduate applicants, asking for course details and which vocational skills they have, or choose particular accreditations that perfectly fit your needs, and make your short-list from that. The interview is then more about the person and how they’ll fit in – rather than establishing whether they can do a specific task.

If you’re looking for training in Cisco, then a CCNA is most probably what you’re looking for. The Cisco training is intended for individuals who wish to understand and work with routers and network switches. Routers connect computer networks to another collection of computer networks over dedicated lines or the internet.

It’s vital that you already know a good deal about how computer networks operate and function, as networks are built with routers. Otherwise, you’ll probably struggle. You might look for a course covering the basics in networking – perhaps Network+ and A+, and then do a CCNA course. Some providers offer this as a career track.

Getting your Cisco CCNA is perfectly sufficient to start with; don’t be cajoled into attempting your CCNP. Once you’ve got a few years experience behind you, you will have a feel for whether you need to train up to this level. If so, your experience will serve as the background you require to take on your CCNP – which is quite a hard qualification to acquire – and mustn’t be entered into casually.

Proper support is incredibly important – ensure you track down something that provides 24×7 direct access, as anything less will not satisfy and will also impede your ability to learn.

Look for training where you can access help at all hours of the day and night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not a message system as this will slow you down – parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back at a convenient time for them.

The very best programs opt for a web-based round-the-clock system utilising a variety of support centres over many time-zones. You will have an environment which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres any time of the day or night: Support when it’s needed.

Never make the mistake of compromise when it comes to your support. The majority of would-be IT professionals that can’t get going properly, would have had a different experience if they’d got the right support package in the first place.

Considering the amount of options that are available, there’s no surprise that nearly all newcomers to the industry get stuck choosing the job they will follow.

Because without any solid background in computing, how should we possibly understand what someone in a particular job does?

Arriving at a well-informed resolution really only appears from a methodical analysis of several shifting key points:

* Personalities play an important part – what things get your juices flowing, and what are the areas that put a frown on your face.

* What time-frame are you looking at for your training?

* Is salary further up on your list of priorities than anything else.

* Understanding what the main IT roles and markets are – and what makes them different.

* The level of commitment and effort you’ll commit getting qualified.

To be honest, it’s obvious that the only real way to investigate these matters tends to be through a good talk with an advisor or professional who has years of experience in IT (as well as it’s commercial requirements.)

Commercial certification is now, undoubtedly, beginning to replace the traditional academic paths into IT – but why is this?

The IT sector is now aware that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, official accreditation from the likes of CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA is far more effective and specialised – for much less time and money.

Of course, an appropriate quantity of relevant additional information has to be covered, but focused specialised knowledge in the required areas gives a commercially trained person a distinct advantage.

What if you were an employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What is easier: Trawl through loads of academic qualifications from several applicants, trying to establish what they know and which vocational skills they’ve acquired, or choose particular accreditations that specifically match what you’re looking for, and make your short-list from that. Your interviews are then about personal suitability – rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.

A study programme must provide a nationally accepted exam as an end-result – and not some unimportant ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting.

Only nationally recognised certification from the likes of Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and Adobe will be useful to a future employer.

With so many different choices of computer training courses available on the market today, it’s advisable to find a company who can guide you on one that will suit you. Professional companies will take the time to talk through differing job options that you might enjoy, prior to deciding on a computer training course that will give you the knowledge you need.

There’s a wide range of courses to choose from. Some people simply want User Skills from Microsoft, whilst others want to get their teeth into Databases, Programming, Networking or Web Design – and these are all possible. But don’t rush into it, don’t pluck a course out of the air. Why not share your ideas with an advisor who knows this commercial sector, and will guide you to where you want to go.

By maximising state-of-the-art training techniques and getting rid of wasteful procedures, you will start to see a new kind of organisation offering a better quality of training and mentoring for hundreds of pounds less.

A subtle way that training companies make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. It looks like a good deal, but let’s just examine it more closely:

Everyone knows they’re still footing the bill for it – obviously it has been inserted into the full cost of the package supplied by the course provider. It’s certainly not free (although some people will believe anything the marketing companies think up these days!)

It’s well known in the industry that if a student pays for each examination, one after the other, there’s a much better chance they’ll pass first time – as they are conscious of what they’ve paid and their application will be greater.

Shouldn’t you be looking to go for the best offer at the appropriate time, not to pay the fees marked up by the training company, and also to sit exams more locally – rather than possibly hours away from your area?

Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on exam fees when there’s absolutely nothing that says you have to? A lot of profit is netted by organisations charging upfront for all their exams – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken.

It’s worth noting, with most ‘Exam Guarantees’ – they control when and how often you are allowed to do a re-take. You’ll have to prove conclusively that you can pass before they’ll pay for another exam.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is naive – when a commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools is what will get you through.

If you’re thinking of using a training academy that is still using workshop days as a benefit of their course, then consider these issues encountered by the majority of students:

* Loads of driving back and forth from the centre – normally quite a distance away.

* If, like many of us, you work, then Mon-Fri workshops are difficult to make. Typically you are having to deal with several days in a row too.

* Lost annual leave – most workers are given only twenty days of leave annually. If over half of it is swallowed up by study classes, that isn’t going to leave much vacation time for the student.

* Training workshops often become quickly full, giving us the only option of a slot that doesn’t really suit.

* Maybe you like to work at a pace that is different to the other class members. Sometimes this causes tension in the class.

* The growing costs associated with travel – travelling to the training centre together with several days bed and breakfast can cost a lot each time you attend. If we just assume 5-10 workshops at about thirty-five pounds for one night’s accommodation, plus forty pounds for petrol and 15.00 for food, we arrive at 450-900 pounds of hidden costs that we now have to fund.

* You should never risk even a small chance of being side-stepped for potential advancement or income boosts while you’re training.

* Surely, all of us at some time have avoided asking a question, because we wanted to maintain the illusion that we did, in fact, understand?

* For those of us who need to at times work or live away part of the time, imagine the trouble involved in getting to the necessary events, as time is now more scarce than ever.

The absolute best situation is by viewing a pre-filmed class – with instructor-led learning available whenever you wish.

Study can happen anywhere that suits. If you’ve got a laptop, you could get a bit of sun in your garden while you study. If you have any difficulties then logon to the 24×7 support facility.

Forget taking notes – every lesson is laid out for you already. If you need to cover something again, it’s there.

Could it be simpler: No travelling, wasted time or money; plus you end up with a more stress-free study setting.

CCNA is the usual starting point for all Cisco training. This will enable you to work on maintaining and installing routers and network switches.

CCNA is the usual starting point for all Cisco training. This will enable you to work on maintaining and installing routers and network switches. Fundamentally, the internet is based upon huge numbers of routers, and big organisations that have various regional departments rely on them to keep their networks in touch.

Jobs that use this type of knowledge mean the chances are you’ll work for large companies that are spread out geographically but need to keep in touch. Or, you may move on to joining an internet service provider. Both types of jobs command good salaries.

Having the right skills and knowledge ahead of starting your Cisco CCNA course skills is crucial. Therefore, it’s probably necessary to speak to an advisor who can tell you what else you need to know.

With so much choice, does it really shock us that a large majority of career changers get stuck choosing the job they could be successful with.

What chances do most of us have of understanding what is involved in a particular job when we haven’t done that before? We normally haven’t met someone who works in that sector anyway.

Consideration of the following issues is imperative when you want to dig down the right solution that will work for you:

* The kind of individual you consider yourself to be – what kind of jobs you get enjoyment from, plus of course – what you hate to do.

* Is your focus to get qualified due to a precise reason – for instance, do you aim to work at home (working for yourself?)?

* Is your income higher on your priority-list than other requirements.

* With many, many different sectors to gain certifications for in computing – you’ll need to achieve a solid grounding on what makes them different.

* Our advice is to think deeply about any sacrifices you’ll need to make, as well as what commitment and time you’re going to invest in your training.

To completely side-step the industry jargon, and reveal the best route for you, have an informal chat with an experienced professional; an individual that understands the commercial reality whilst covering each qualification.

You should look for an authorised exam preparation system as part of your training package.

Students regularly can be thrown off course by going through practice questions that don’t come from official boards. It’s not uncommon that the way questions are phrased can be quite different and you should be prepared for this.

Ensure that you have some simulated exam questions in order to verify your knowledge whenever you need to. Practice or ‘mock’ exams will help to boost your attitude – so you won’t be quite so nervous at the actual exam.

Can job security honestly exist anymore? In the UK for instance, where business constantly changes its mind on a day-to-day basis, it certainly appears not.

It’s possible though to hit upon market-level security, by searching for areas that have high demand, mixed with work-skill shortages.

The Information Technology (IT) skills shortfall around the country currently stands at approx twenty six percent, as shown by the 2006 e-Skills investigation. This shows that for every 4 jobs that are available in IT, there are only 3 trained people to fulfil that role.

Gaining full commercial computing certification is correspondingly an effective route to realise a continuing and worthwhile career.

It would be hard to imagine if a better time or market circumstances could exist for obtaining certification in this hugely increasing and evolving industry.

One useful service offered by some training providers is a Job Placement Assistance program. The service is put in place to help you find your first job in the industry. At the end of the day it’s not as hard as some people make out to land your first job – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.

Bring your CV up to date as soon as possible however (advice and support for this should come from your course provider). Don’t wait until you’ve qualified.

It’s not uncommon to find that junior support jobs have been offered to people who’re still on their course and have still to get qualified. This will at least get you on your way.

Generally, you’ll receive better performance from a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service than any course provider’s recruitment division, as they will be more familiar with the area and local employers.

Do make sure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, and then do nothing more and expect somebody else to secure your first position. Get off your backside and make your own enquiries. Channel the same energy and enthusiasm into finding your new role as it took to pass the exams.

Commercial qualifications are now, undoubtedly, starting to replace the more academic tracks into the IT sector – but why is this?

As demand increases for knowledge about more and more complex technology, industry has of necessity moved to the specialised training only available through the vendors themselves – in other words companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA. Often this saves time and money for the student.

Typically, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. It isn’t quite as lean as that might sound, but principally the objective has to be to cover the precise skills needed (including a degree of required background) – without trying to cram in all sorts of other things – in the way that academic establishments often do.

If an employer is aware what they’re looking for, then all it takes is an advert for the exact skill-set required to meet that need. Commercial syllabuses are set to exacting standards and don’t change between schools (in the way that degree courses can).

Whether you’re just about to get started, or have a certain amount of knowledge but are ready to gain acknowledged certifications, there are interactive MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) courses to educate both standards of student.

To qualify at the level of MCSA you need to pass 4 Microsoft Certified Professional exams (MCP’s). If you’re joining the industry for the first time, the chances are you’ll need to have some coaching before tackling the 4 MCP’s. Identify a training company that has a team of advisors who can identify the right way to tackle your goal and who will get you started in the right place.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, involving piles of reference textbooks, is usually pretty hard going. If this describes you, check out study materials which feature interactive and multimedia modules.

Studies in learning psychology have shown that we remember much more when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we take action to use what we’ve learned.

The latest audio-visual interactive programs involving demonstration and virtual lab’s beat books hands-down. And you’ll actually enjoy doing them.

It makes sense to see some examples of the kind of training materials you’ll be using before you hand over your cheque. You should expect instructor demonstrations, video tutorials and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

Avoid training that is purely online. Always choose CD or DVD based study materials where possible, so you can use them wherever and whenever you want – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

Chat with a practiced advisor and they’ll regale you with many terrible tales of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Stick to a professional advisor who digs deep to uncover the best thing for you – not for their bank-account! Dig until you find a starting-point that will suit you.

With a little commercial experience or certification, your starting-point of learning is very different to someone completely new.

Where this will be your first attempt at studying for an IT examination then you may want to start with a user-skills course first.

When was the last time you considered your job security? For most of us, we only think of this after we experience a knock-back. But in today’s marketplace, the lesson often learned too late is that our job security has gone the way of the dodo, for nearly everyone now.

Where there are growing skills shortages and escalating demand however, we always locate a newly emerging type of market-security; where, fuelled by conditions of continuous growth, organisations are struggling to hire the influx of staff needed.

Offering the IT sector as an example, the 2006 e-Skills study showed a skills gap throughout Great Britain around the 26 percent mark. Put simply, we can’t properly place more than just three out of each four job positions in the computing industry.

This glaring fact highlights the validity and need for more properly certified computer professionals around the UK.

In reality, seeking in-depth commercial IT training throughout the coming years is probably the greatest career move you’ll ever make.

Getting your first commercial position can be a little easier if you’re supported with a Job Placement Assistance facility. It can happen though that too much is made of this feature, because it is actually not that hard for any focused and well taught person to get work in this industry – because companies everywhere are seeking well trained people.

Help and assistance with preparing a CV and getting interviews is sometimes offered (alternatively, check out one of our sites for help). Ensure you bring your CV right up to date straight away – don’t wait until you’ve finished your exams!

You’ll often find that you will be offered your initial job whilst you’re still studying (occasionally right at the beginning). If your CV doesn’t say what you’re learning – or it’s not getting in front of interviewers, then you aren’t even in the running!

You can usually expect better performance from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than any training course provider’s recruitment division, as they’ll know the area better.

A slight frustration of some training course providers is how hard trainees are prepared to study to pass exams, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the position they’ve trained for. Get out there and hustle – you might find it’s fun.

Being at the forefront of revolutionary new technology is about as exciting as it can get. You become one of a team of people creating a future for us all.

We’ve barely started to see just how technology will influence everything we do. Computers and the Internet will massively alter the way we view and interact with the world around us over the years to come.

If making decent money is way up on your list of priorities, then you will welcome the news that the regular income for a typical IT worker is significantly more than salaries in other market sectors.

The need for appropriately qualified IT professionals is assured for a good while yet, due to the continuous growth in IT dependency in commerce and the massive deficiency still present.

Currently in the UK, commercial institutions could not function efficiently without the help of support workers mending PC’s and networks, while making recommendations to users each and every day. Because our society becomes growingly dependent on our PC’s, we simultaneously find ourselves increasingly more reliant upon the commercially qualified IT networkers, who ensure the systems function properly.

With all the options available, does it really shock us that a large percentage of newcomers to the industry don’t really understand the best career path they could be successful with.

As without any commercial skills in computing, in what way could we understand what someone in a particular job does?

Generally, the way to deal with this predicament correctly lies in a full talk over several different topics:

* Our personalities play a starring role – what gives you a ‘kick’, and what are the areas that you really dislike.

* For what reasons you’re stepping into computing – it could be you’re looking to achieve a life-long goal like being self-employed maybe.

* What salary and timescale needs that guide you?

* Often, trainees don’t consider the work expected to achieve their goals.

* Our advice is to think deeply about the amount of time and effort you’re going to give to your training.

The bottom line is, the only real way of covering these is through an in-depth discussion with an experienced advisor who through years of experience will give you the information required.

Don’t accept anything less than the current Microsoft (or relevant organisation’s) authorised exam preparation packages.

Due to the fact that a lot of examining boards for IT tend to be American, it’s essential to understand how exam questions will be phrased and formatted. It’s no use just going through the right questions – it’s essential that you can cope with them in the proper exam format.

As you can imagine, it is vital to know that you’ve thoroughly prepared for your actual certification exam prior to doing it. Rehearsing mock-up tests adds to your knowledge bank and will save a lot of money on thwarted exam entries.

A knowledgeable and specialised advisor (in contrast with a salesperson) will talk through your current situation. There is no other way of establishing the starting point for your education.

Of course, if you’ve had any relevant previous certification, then you can sometimes expect to begin at a different level to a trainee with no history to speak of.

For students starting IT studies and exams as a new venture, it’s often a good idea to avoid jumping in at the deep-end, beginning with some basic user skills first. This can be built into most training packages.

A sneaky way that training companies make more money is through up-front charges for exams and offering an exam guarantee. It looks impressive, until you think it through:

You’ll be charged for it one way or another. It’s definitely not free – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole.

People who take each progressive exam, funding them one at a time are in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt. They’re conscious of their investment and so are more inclined to ensure they are ready.

Go for the best offer you can find at the appropriate time, and avoid college mark-up fees. You’ll then be able to select where you do your exams – which means you can stay local.

A lot of so-called credible training providers make huge profits by getting in the money for all the exam fees up-front and hoping either that you won’t take them, or it will be a long time before you do.

It’s also worth noting that ‘Exam Guarantees’ often aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. Most companies won’t pay for re-takes until you have demonstrated conclusively that you won’t fail again.

Paying maybe a thousand pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is naive – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really guarantee success.

Commercial qualifications are now, without a doubt, starting to replace the older academic routes into IT – so why is this the case?

Key company training (in industry terminology) is far more specialised and product-specific. The IT sector is aware that specialisation is what’s needed to service the demands of a technically advancing marketplace. Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA dominate in this arena.

Vendor training works through concentrating on the particular skills that are needed (along with an appropriate level of related knowledge,) instead of covering masses of the background detail and ‘fluff’ that degree courses often do – to fill a three or four year course.

It’s a bit like the TV advert: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know where they have gaps, and then advertise for someone with the specific certification. They’ll know then that all applicants can do what they need.

A fraction of the working population in the UK today are enjoying job satisfaction. The vast majority of course will take no action. The fact that you’ve got this far at least tells us that you’ve realised change must come.

We’d recommend that before you start a course of training, you have a conversation with someone who is familiar with the working environment and can point you in the right direction. The right person will be able to assess your personal likes and dislikes and give you guidance on the right role for you:

* Do you like to be around others at work? Do you like to deal with the public? Or are you better with things that you deal with by yourself?

* Building and Banking are a little shaky at the moment, so which sector would suit you best?

* Once you’ve qualified, would you like your skills to get you jobs for the rest of your working life?

* Would it be useful for your retraining to be in an industry where you believe you’ll remain employable until retirement?

We would advise you to really explore the IT industry – there are increasingly more jobs than staff to fill them, plus it’s a rare career choice where the sector is on the grow. In contrast to the beliefs of some, it isn’t just geeks looking at screens every day (though naturally some jobs are like that.) Most positions are filled by average folk who like receiving larger than average salaries.

If your advisor doesn’t question you thoroughly – chances are they’re just trying to sell you something. If they’re pushing towards a particular product before learning about your history and experience, then you know you’re being sold to.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you can sometimes expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to a student who’s starting from scratch.

Starting with a foundation module first is often the best way to commence your computer programme, depending on your current skill level.

Look at the following points and pay great regard to them if you believe the sales ploy of examination guarantees seems like a good idea:

Of course it isn’t free – you’re still coughing up for it – the price has simply been included in the whole thing.

It’s well known in the industry that when trainees fund their relevant examinations, one after the other, the chances are they’re going to pass every time – as they’ll be conscious of what they’ve paid and therefore will put more effort into their preparation.

Why should you pay a college in advance for exam fees? Find the best deal you can at the appropriate time, don’t pay mark-ups – and do it in a local testing centre – not at somewhere of their bidding.

Is there a good reason to pay interest on a bigger loan than is necessary because you’ve paid early for examinations when there’s absolutely nothing that says you have to? Big margins are netted by organisations getting money in early for exam fees – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken.

Most companies will require you to sit pre-tests and hold you back from re-takes until you’ve proven conclusively that you can pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

With average prices for VUE and Pro-metric tests in the United Kingdom costing around 112 pounds, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. Not to fork out thousands extra in up-front costs. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Don’t put too much store, as can often be the case, on the certification itself. You’re not training for the sake of training; you should be geared towards the actual job at the end of it. Begin and continue with the end in mind.

Never let yourself become one of those unfortunate people that choose a course that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – and end up with a certification for a career they’ll never really get any satisfaction from.

Set targets for earning potential and what level of ambition fits you. Often, this changes which particular accreditations will be required and what you can expect to give industry in return.

Seek guidance and advice from an experienced industry advisor, even if there’s a fee involved – it’s much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning if your choices are appropriate, rather than find out after 2 years that you aren’t going to enjoy the job you’ve chosen and have to start from the beginning again.

One of the most important things to insist on has to be 24×7 round-the-clock support with professional mentors and instructors. It’s an all too common story to find providers that only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends.

Avoid those companies who use ‘out-of-hours’ call-centres – where you’ll get called back during office hours. This is no use if you’re stuck and could do with an answer during your scheduled study period.

Top training companies incorporate three or four individual support centres active in different time-zones. They use an online interactive interface to seamlessly link them all together, any time of the day or night, help is just seconds away, without any problems or delays.

Look for an educator that is worth purchasing from. As only live 24×7 round-the-clock support truly delivers for technical programs.

There is a tidal wave of change flooding technology in the near future – and the industry becomes more ground-breaking every year.

We’re barely beginning to get a handle on how this will truly impact our way of life. The way we interrelate with the rest of the world will be inordinately affected by technology and the internet.

A usual IT worker over this country as a whole will also earn significantly more than equivalent professionals outside of IT. Mean average remuneration packages are hard to beat nationally.

There is a substantial nationwide need for trained and qualified IT technicians. In addition, as the industry constantly develops, it looks like there’s going to be for quite some time to come.

Whether you’re new to the industry, or a professional ready to gain acknowledged certifications, you’ll discover interactive Microsoft MCSA study programs to educate both levels of entry.

Each scenario should have a different type of course, so ensure you’re being offered the best one before making a start. Find a training company that talks with you so they learn what you’re trying to achieve, and will give you direction on what you want to do, well before they start talking about courses.

Have you recently questioned your job security? Typically, this only rears its head when something dramatic happens to shake us. But in today’s marketplace, the lesson often learned too late is that our job security doesn’t really exist anymore, for nearly everyone now.

However, a sector experiencing fast growth, with huge staffing demands (due to an enormous shortfall of trained workers), opens the possibility of proper job security.

Investigating the IT sector, a recent e-Skills study brought to light a twenty six percent shortfall of skilled workers. Basically, we only have the national capacity to fill 3 out of each 4 job positions in the computer industry.

This one notion alone highlights why the country is in need of many more new trainees to join the IT industry.

With the market developing at the speed it is, there really isn’t any other market worth looking at for your new career.

If an advisor doesn’t ask many questions – the likelihood is they’re just trying to sell you something. If they wade straight in with a specific product before looking at your personality and whether you have any commercial experience, then it’s very likely to be the case.

Often, the starting point of study for a student experienced in some areas will be largely different to the student with no experience.

It’s wise to consider some basic user skills first. This can often make your learning curve a much easier going.

One interesting way that training companies make extra profits is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. It looks impressive, but let’s just examine it more closely:

It’s become essential these days that we’re a tad more knowledgeable about sales gimmicks – and generally we know that for sure we are actually being charged for it (it’s not a freebie because they like us so much!)

Passing first time is everyone’s goal. Progressively working through your exams in order and paying for them just before taking them puts you in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt – you revise thoroughly and are aware of the costs involved.

Look for the very best offer you can at the time, and keep hold of your own money. You also get more choice of where you take your exam – so you can choose somewhere closer to home.

Buying a course that includes payments for examination fees (and if you’re financing your study there’ll be interest on that) is a false economy. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with additional funds simply to help their cash-flow! A lot bank on the fact that you won’t get to do them all – so they don’t need to pay for them.

The majority of companies will insist that you take mock exams first and not allow you to re-take an exam until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – which actually leaves you with no guarantee at all.

Exams taken at local centres are approximately 112 pounds in the United Kingdom today. Why spend so much more on fees for ‘exam guarantees’ (usually wrapped up in the course package price) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

You should remember: the course itself or an accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the particular job that you want to end up in is. Too many training companies over-emphasise just the training course.

Don’t be one of those unfortunate people who select a program which looks like it could be fun – only to end up with a qualification for something they’ll never enjoy.

It’s a good idea to understand what industry will expect from you. What precise qualifications you’ll be required to have and in what way you can gain some industry experience. It’s definitely worth spending time thinking about how far you’d like to build your skill-set as it may affect your choice of accreditations.

Chat with a skilled advisor that has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and who’ll explain to you a detailed description of what to expect in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this before you start on any study program will save you both time and money.

Be alert that all exams you’re working towards will be commercially viable and are bang up to date. Training companies own certificates are often meaningless.

The top IT companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco each have widely recognised proficiency courses. These big-hitters can make sure you stand out at interview.
